Ways of feeding a baby besides a or bottle?

I keep seeing answers on here that talk about a medicine spoon, cup, spoon, etc. Pardon my ignorance but does this mean that you can feed milk, or formula, with a spoon? What are the advantages? Wouldn't it affect the baby's sucking ability? Someone enlighten me!
